Hello, I’m Wilbur Suero

I’m a Staff Backend Engineer specializing in Distributed Systems, Applied AI, and Ruby on Rails. I design and scale B2B products, build data-heavy architectures, and engineer production LLM-driven workflows that power conversational AI and analytics at scale.

Currently, I work at Puzzle, where I own and ship production AI features supporting tens of thousands of daily users.

“No Magic, Just Systems.”

My engineering worldview is simple: I am the engineer who removes complexity from complex systems. Most software engineering problems aren't solved by writing clever, hyper-complicated code—they are solved by choosing the right abstractions, understanding database index behaviors, and building clean, predictable systems that human operators can maintain without getting paged in the middle of the night.

What I do

I focus on building software that solves expensive problems. I ensure backend systems stay correct under concurrency, stay fast under high load, and remain predictable and debuggable at scale—translating directly into reduced infrastructure bills and higher operational uptime.

Most of my daily work centers around the intersection of applied AI and backend infrastructure. I obsess over production constraints: optimizing background processing (Sidekiq, Redis, Elixir services), reducing LLM API inference latency by 60%, and slashing token costs through caching, batching, and early-exit execution flows to maintain high reliability and cost-efficiency.

My background includes a deep foundation in graphic design and multimedia, having graduated from the Altos de Chavón School of Design and ITLA. This unique design-leaning perspective gives me a high standard for usability, responsive interfaces, and developer experience—bridging the gap between robust system engineering and visual product execution.

Tech I work with

  • Programming Languages: Ruby, JavaScript, TypeScript, Elixir, SQL, HTML/CSS
  • Frameworks: Ruby on Rails, React, Next.js, Node.js
  • Backend & Data Systems: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, Apache Kafka, Sidekiq, GraphQL, REST APIs
  • Infrastructure & DevOps: AWS (S3, ECS), Docker, Heroku, CI/CD Pipelines
  • Quality & Observability: RSpec, TDD (Test-Driven Development), Datadog, Performance Profiling, Incident Response

Engineering Leadership & Operations

As a Staff Engineer, my role goes beyond writing code. I guide teams through the entire lifecycle of software systems, ensuring engineering efforts align directly with product outcomes and operational stability:

  • System Deconstruction & Monolith-to-Modulith: Successfully led technical migrations, converting tightly coupled monolithic systems into clean, modular architectures without causing downtime or disrupting product delivery.
  • Incident Response & Firefighting: Guided response teams to resolve critical production outages, building operational observability and automating mitigation tools to ensure outages don't repeat.
  • Technical Mentorship: Championed TDD and domain-driven design practices, leading by example to raise code quality, simplify testing codebases, and increase test coverage to over 95%.
  • Product & Stakeholder Collaboration: Translated complex engineering constraints into clear business trade-offs, enabling product teams to move fast while keeping architectural debt in check.

Beyond the code

Outside of system engineering, I live in La Romana with my wife and our three children (aged 15, 10, and 2). When I'm not at the keyboard, you'll likely find me running, boxing, gardening, or hanging out with our dogs.

I am a Christian, and my faith anchors my commitment to integrity, humility, and mentorship in both my life and my engineering work. My background in visual arts (graduating from the Altos de Chavón School of Design and ITLA) keeps me connected to layout aesthetics, human-computer interfaces, and the craft of visual storytelling.
